Affordable Architecture and Design

We design lifestyle enhancing products and projects that are at once elegant, innovative and economical. We develop these high quality items, while maintaining affordability, through progressive design and the streamlined integration of all facets of the manufacturing process from concept to fabrication.

Everything we produce is both refined and efficient because of our careful research in the selection of high performance building systems and all natural materials. This includes systems and materials that are friendly to both the home and natural environments. In the end, all our aesthetically provocative designs are easy and inexpensive to maintain as well as promote a healthy and comfortable lifestyle.

Erin Vali founded Ulterior Mode LLC in 2001 to provide affordable architectural design solutions for challenging problems. Mr. Vali’s early work included affordable residential structures that have been featured in the New York Times and compared to the experimental, low-cost, mid-century California Case Study houses designed by notable architects and designers Eero Saarinen, Richard Neutra, and Charles and Ray Eames.  Among Vali’s most recent projects are low-income residential housing developments based around community kitchens designed to provide meaningful opportunities for social interaction, while enabling residents to prepare meals conveniently and economically.  Vali’s pro bono work has also focused on designing daycare facilities New York City that offer stimulating spaces for pre-kindergarten children that facilitate both learning and fun.  Erin Vali holds a Master’s of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University.
